Fluval FX4 is a high performance canister filter with many outstanding features designed to make aquarium fish keeping easier and more convenient than ever. This super capacity yet compact canister filter has a pump output of 700 gallons of water and has a filter circulation of 450 GPH, which both work to produce cleaner and healthier results. Filtering material can easily be placed in a removable stack of media baskets, which is at the heart of Fluval's multistage filtration. The baskets are precision-engineered to eliminate water by-pass, making filtration more efficient. The baskets can hold a total of 1 gallon of media and can be stacked in the precise combination of layers that will work best for your aquarium. Each one is lined with a foam insert for effective mechanical pre-filtering. Instant-release T-handles let you lift and separate the baskets quickly and easily, making routine maintenance simpler. FX4 also features Smart Pump Technology, which provides optimal filter performance. This advanced technological feature employs an electronic circuit board that continually monitors the pump. This thing is a beast. I write this after being a little ticked off during set up, because the clamps they give you for the hosing do NOT fit over the black trim on top of the tank. At this price point, that is annoying and frankly a little ridiculous. I broke the first clamp trying to force it on, which made me furious after paying this much. For the second one, I took a hack saw and just carved out a 2-inch piece of trim, then the clip fit over it correctly. It's all staying in place ok but just something to be aware of. Kind of a big oversight for such a basic thing.
Anyway, the filter: It's incredible. I am using it for a red-eared slider (turtles create a lot of waste) in a 75-gallon tank. I also have some small fish in there that slowly disappear each day. The water stays remarkably clear. It looks like I just did a water change every day. This is as close to set-it-and-forget-it as you can get. I can't speak to longevity yet but I am blown away by the performance. Just get it, if you can afford it. It makes this all so much easier.
Edit: It's been a year and still going strong. I clean the pads and filter every other month, replacing things as needed - honestly I probably haven't had to replace anything but have just to be thorough. Still working in perfect order with a RES, large convict cichlid and tera fish coexisting peacefully. Water crystal clear. -

Quit researching and just buy it!! Bought for my 125 G with 4 aquatic turtles plus a dozen plus fish....tap water like crystal clear water and silent!
3/25/18 UPDATE - No issues what so ever. Polished, clear water continues.
6/14/18 UPDATE - 6 months in, 3 turtles doubled in size (one died RIP) and over 100 guppies (the breeding "rabbits" of fish!!)...totally polished crystal clear water and NO issues what so ever - love love love this filter. 11/6/18 UPDATE - No issues, could not be more pleased. Added 3 baby turtles.
I've kept fish for almost 50 years...just buy it!!!!
11/16/19 UPDATE - Still kicking B___, 7 turtles growing and happy - 5 painted varieties and 2 pink belly sideneck turtles - and guppies galore, plus Cory's...I clean every 90 days - carbon, Purigen, and bio max = crystal clear - no leaks, no issues what so ever - quiet easy clear water!!!! Can not more highly recommend. -
